In the young nation of Timor-Leste, a group of local lead teachers called SESIM (Center for the Study of Science and Mathematics) is carrying out nation-wide teacher training for science and mathematics teachers at junior-high level. This two-year training scheme follows the curriculum revision the SESIM completed early last year, and is supported by KOICA, the Korean national development agency.
Working with the Timor-Leste Ministry of Education, SESIM uses a hands-on, inquiry based pedagogy based on learning activities using simple materials from everyday life (termed pratika in the local language Tetun) in order to make the curricular concepts meaningful for the students. SESIM has written teacher guides and pratika manual for 7th through 9th grade, including over 100 locally relevant activities.
